Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board gives tips for hiring contractors to repair storm damage (2024)

BENTON COUNTY, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Multiple areas in Northwest Arkansas were hit by tornadoes and severe storms on Sunday morning, leaving behind many damaged businesses and homes.

Licensed contractors are in the area to help residents recover. However, the damage also brings in “storm chasing” contractors looking to take advantage of people when they are at their most vulnerable.

The Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board recently released some tips to help those affected by the storms avoid becoming a victim of one of those storm chasers.

Plan your project – Detail what needs to be done and the type of contractor needed to complete. Every project is different and may require a specialty licensed contractor.
Get multiple estimates – ACLB says when comparing estimates, don’t just look at the bottom line cost. Look at the quality and cost of materials for each one. Make sure the estimate includes the total price, materials to be used, timetable for payments expected time to complete the work.
Check at least three references – Ask the contractor for three written references. When speaking with those references, ask if they were satisfied with the contractor’s work and if the contractor kept to the schedule and contract terms.
Require a written contract – ACLB says the contract should include what work needs to be done, the materials to be used and the equipment that will be installed. Be sure it includes a schedule of payments and a timeline for when the work will be completed and any changes that occur should be noted in writing.
Never agree to pay money up front and do not make the final payment until the job is complete.
Monitor the job in progress and keep all the paperwork.
Verify that the contractor has the appropriate licenses and permits to do the job.
