What is the Pitch Report for PNG vs UGA, ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Group C, Match 9?

Both PNG and Uganda have played their respective opening matches at this venue and know exactly how the wicket plays. The surface is usually slow where spinners will come into play right from the ball one. Batters have to apply themselves better rather than going for big shots to put up a respectable total on the board. Scores of more than 160 are tough to chase here.

Pre-Match Analysis:

Papua New Guinea made two-time champions West Indies work extremely hard to gain a victory over them when both sides met here at Providence Stadium, Guyana on the inaugural day of the competition. After being put into bat first, reeling on a timely half-century from Sese Bau they set up a decent target of 137 at the end of 20 overs. Wicketkeeper batter Kiplin Doriga’s late flourish of unbeaten 27* run-knock caught the attention as well. In response, the bowlers exerted pressure right from the start against the star-studded Windies batting line-up and took control of the match at one point, leaving the hosts at 5 for 97 at the end of 16 overs.

However, All-rounders Roston Chase and Andre Russell’s unbeaten 40* run-stand for the 6th wicket in just 18 balls snatched the win away from them. One of the key takeaways from the loss is that they exploited the conditions and bowled slowly. Now, they are eager to go one step further to secure their maiden T20 World Cup win.

Uganda got the reality check of quality cricket at this level in their first outing against Afghanistan as they surrendered quite easily with a colossal 125-run loss. They sent in Afghanistan to bat first, but the decision back-fired them immensely where they ended up conceding 183 runs at the end of 20 overs. Their weak batting link was exposed against a vicious Afghan bowling attack as they faltered for a paltry 58 with only Riazat Ali Shah and Robinson Obuya scoring double digits.

Not the way, they wanted to kick start their maiden T20 World Cup however they have learned a valuable lesson which is going to be helpful in many ways going ahead in the tournament.
